At the first meeting of the new City Council, Bruce Teague was again elected Mayor by his fellow councilors, while Councilor Megan Alter was elected as Mayor Pro Tem.
The votes took place at a special formal meeting of the City Council at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026. Both votes were 4-3.
Teague was first elected to Council during a special election in 2018 and was elected Mayor by Council in 2020, 2022, and 2024.
Alter was elected to the Council in November 2021 and was selected as Mayor Pro Tem in January 2022, serving in that position until January 2024.
In Iowa City, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are determined by the City Council; those terms will continue until the first meeting in January 2028.
