FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
West Liberty, Iowa — On January 11, 2026, the West Liberty Police Department (WLPD) requested assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) following an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 500 block of N. Elm Street earlier this morning.
At approximately 6:46 a.m., officers with the West Liberty Police Department and the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon making contact with the suspect, the individual immediately advanced toward officers while armed with a knife. Officers attempted to deploy a Taser, which was ineffective. An officer then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect.
The suspect was subsequently disarmed and taken into custody. Officers immediately rendered emergency medical aid before the suspect was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment.
There is no ongoing threat to the public, and this is believed to be an isolated incident.
The involved officers were not injured. The West Liberty Police Department officer involved has been placed on critical incident leave in accordance with department policy. Names and additional details will not be released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
Assisting agencies include the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Police Department, Wilton Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, and West Liberty Fire/EMS.
