A Rock Island Illinois woman was taken into custody last week after allegedly trying to steal hundreds of dollars in merchandise from a downtown Iowa City store.
The incident occurred January 12th at the Target on East Washington Street. Officers responded to reports of a theft and reportedly observed 41-year-old Ashley McMurtrey leaving the store. They detained her and allegedly found her in possession of multiple stolen items totaling over $625.
The incident was reportedly witnessed by employees and captured on closed-circuit cameras.
McMurtrey was charged with 4th degree Theft and faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
