A sentencing date has been set for the owner of a Quad Cities-based waste management company in a case stemming from the death of an employee at its Iowa City location.

The Johnson County Attorney’s Office says that on January 16th 83-year-old James Watts of Bettendorf pleaded guilty to a charge of Failure to Maintain Workers’ Comp Insurance on behalf of himself and his business, Hawkeye Waste Systems. Sentencing is set for March 19th.

In April 2025, Hawkeye Waste Systems and four of its employees and corporate officers were cited for Failure to Maintain Worker’s Compensation Insurance after an employee, Matthew Reuwsaat, died on November 9, 2024 when he was crushed by a skid loader at the business’s Commerce Drive location.
