Charges have been dismissed against a former Iowa City hotel manager accused of mismanaging funds.

Online records show 26-year-old Shelbie Jeffrey agreed this week to pay restitution in the case, and a 2nd Degree Theft charge was dismissed.

Iowa City Police say Jeffrey was the manager of the Hampton Inn on Sturgis Corner Drive in 2024 while the hotel owner, Hawkeye Hotels, had an arrangement with a local swim instruction school to rent the hotel’s pool.

Jeffrey allegedly went around the agreement by directing the swim school to write rental payment checks directly to her.  Police say she was following the lead of her predecessor, 60-year-old Monica Adair of Solon, who ran the same scheme from June 2023 to February 2024. Adair pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Theft last November and was given a suspended sentence.
