An Iowa House subcommittee advanced a bill Wednesday that would ban county or city-issued ID cards.

CBS 2 reports Iowans packed a subcommittee room Wednesday, with many speakers from Johnson County speaking against the proposal. The county issues their own IDs as a second form of ID that can be used at banks, schools, local agencies and law enforcement.

Sarah Terlouw is the executive director for the International Rescue Commission in Iowa. She said the cards help law enforcement to do their jobs more efficiently. She added, “When individuals can verify their identity, routine interactions take less time, are more secure, and people are more willing to report crimes or assist with investigations.”

The bill has no registered lobbyists in favor of the bill, and the Gazette reported no one spoke during the subcommittee meeting in favor of the bill. Nevertheless, the two Republicans on the committee voted to advance the bill, with the lone Democrat voting against it. Mike Vondran, representative from Scott County, said the bill warrants more of a conversation.
