A Johnson County deputy reports stopping a potential wrong-way driver before he could enter Interstate 80.
The deputy reports seeing 28-year-old Ryan Smith of Coralville behind the wheel of a 2019 Toyota Rav4 attempting to enter the wrong lanes of traffic on I-80 from the Dubuque Street exit just after 10:45 Thursday night. Smith reportedly showed signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking a pint of vodka, and felt he was too intoxicated to drive. He allegedly refused breath and field sobriety testing and has a previous drunk driving conviction from 2023 in Minnesota.
Smith is charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense.
