Iowa manufactured home residents are gathering for a ” Day at the Capitol” Thursday to call on legislators to enact newly filed legislation that includes protections for mobile home park residences.

According to a release from the Iowa Manufactured Home Residents Network, residents are demanding legislators enact the pillars of their “Bill of Rights,” which include  rent protection, fair fees, just cause eviction standards,  fair, legal leases, and required notice allowing residents first right of purchase when a park property is up for sale. Residents are also calling on lawmakers to oppose proposed Iowa Senate legislation that would further weaken legal rights and protections for residents.

The release quotes Candi Evans, who owns a home located in North Liberty’s Golfview Park. She said, “Iowa Code covering manufactured homes has over decades become severely imbalanced in favor of park owners over residents. It’s long past time to protect Iowans and affordable housing,”

Linda Hickson lives at Lake Ridge Estates. She told KCRG TV that she recently received a letter from Havenpark Communities, the park owner, outlining possible future upgrades, but has yet to see those improvements happen. She added that since they purchased the park a few years ago, there has been a reduction in services as rents rise.

Representative from Havenpark met with Johnson County Supervisors Rod Sullivan and V. Fixer-Oraiz last week.
