COLUMBUS, Ohio — The eighth ranked University of Iowa wrestling team fell to No. 2 Ohio State, 24-9, on Friday night at the Covelli Center.
“We’ve got opportunities we have to capitalize on,” head coach Tom Brands said. “That is probably the biggest thing, where you’re looking to improve and that is capitalizing on opportunities to score.”
The dual began at 157 pounds, where Victor Voinovich III gave Iowa an early 3-0 lead with a 5-0 decision over Maddox Shaw.
At 165 pounds, third ranked Michael Caliendo added to the Hawkeye advantage with an 8-2 decision over e’Than Birden. Iowa continued its momentum at 174, as No. 3 Patrick Kennedy earned a ranked win with a 4-1 decision over No. 5 Carson Kharchla.
Ohio State earned its first victory of the night at 184 pounds when No. 8 Dylan Fishback defeated Gabe Arnold, 4-1, in sudden victory. The Buckeyes followed with bonus points at 197, as No. 10 Luke Geog posted a 13-4 major decision over Brody Sampson.
Despite the surge, Iowa carried a 9-7 lead into the intermission.
Out of the break, No. 3 Nick Feldman edged No. 8 Ben Kueter, 3 2, at heavyweight to give Ohio State its first team lead at 10-9.
At 125 pounds, second ranked Nic Bouzakis used a seven point move in the opening period to build an early advantage and secured a 9-5 decision over No. 6 Dean Peterson. The Buckeyes extended their lead at 133, as No. 2 Ben Davino defeated No. 9 Drake Ayala, 4-2.
Ohio State put the dual out of reach at 141 pounds, where top ranked Jesse Mendez recorded a 21-3 technical fall over Kale Petersen to make it 21-9.
The Buckeyes closed out the dual at 149 pounds with a 4-1 sudden victory win by No. 7 Ethan Stiles over No. 18 Ryder Block.
“Voinovich, we can probably break that one open,” Brands said. “Caliendo going for bonus points, have to tack them down. Kennedy won a tough match, and I think we can score there. He had a lot of looks and opportunities, and we have to capitalize on those. Kennedy was on the right side of it, and Arnold was on the other side of it. Kueter was on the other side of it. Ayala was in three times, that was progress.”
