Des Moines, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team crowned six champions at the Grand View Open on Saturday. The Hawkeyes collected 13 top-three finishes.
At 103 pounds, No. 1 Valarie Solorio secured the title with an 8-6 win by decision over teammate Sterling Dias. In the semifinals, she took down No. 8 Trinity Pendergrass (Quincy) in a 9-2 decision.
No. 3 Nyla Valencia defeated Tristan Nitta of Grand View by decision (4-0). She also notched two technical falls and a fall on her way to the championship.
At 131 pounds, Bella Williams got the upset win in a close 3-2 decision over teammate and No. 1 ranked Karlee Brooks.
No. 1 Reese Larramendy took down Margaret Buurma of Grand Valley State with an 11-0 win by technical fall to claim the title at 145 pounds.
No.1 Kylie Welker secured an 11-0 technical fall over teammate Naomi Simon who was wrestling unattached at 180 pounds. Simon took down No. 2 Isabella Renfro (Fort Hays State) by fall in the semifinals.
At 207 pounds, after securing three technical falls and a fall on her way to the finals, Katja Osteen clinched the 12-1 technical fall over Haley Ward of Avila.
