Legislation introduced that would criminalize abortion in Iowa

Republican Representative Zach Dieken has introduced legislation that would abolish and criminalize abortion by classifying it as homicide.

The Daily Iowan reports the legislation was written by Bradley Pierce, president of the Foundation to Abolish Abortion, an advocacy group that argues abortion should be treated as a criminal act rather than regulated through gestational limits.

Current Iowa law bans most abortions after fetal cardiac activity, which normally occurs at around six weeks, with exceptions. The new legislation rejects all exceptions and calls for equal protection under the law for unborn children.

A press release from the Foundation says because Republicans control the Governor’s office, the House and the Senate, there should be no reason to avoid passing the legislation.
