3 UI baseball players earn preseason honors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Three University of Iowa baseball players — sophomore Tyler Guerin and seniors Gable Mitchell and Caleb Wulf — have been named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list, the conference announced Wednesday.

Last season, Mitchell started all 56 games, batting .329 with 74 hits in 225 at-bats, including 18 doubles and five home runs. The Iowa City native scored 52 runs and drove in 44.

Wulf made 49 appearances, including 40 starts, in his first season at Iowa. He batted .364 with 51 hits in 140 at-bats, including four doubles and one home run. Wulf recorded a season-high four hits in five at-bats with three RBIs against Washington State on Feb. 28 and finished the season with 26 runs scored and 27 RBIs.

Guerin appeared in 14 games last season, allowing 12 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 25 batters over 16 2/3 innings. The Shoreview, Minnesota, also delivered a pinch-hit appearance in his home state against Minnesota on March 28, driving in two runs, and pitched the following day to earn a save.

Iowa opens the season Friday, Feb. 13, against Kansas State in Goodyear, Arizona
