With the recent warm temperatures and dry conditions, several local residents may be planning controlled burns this weekend. The Jefferson-Monroe Fire Department, which serves the Swisher area, has released some tips for those planning on burning vegetation.
Watch the wind closely, keep water and tools ready, and never leave a fire unattended. Also, always call the non-emergency dispatch number for your local fire department before you burn to let them know.
If the proper equipment is unavailable, some local fire departments will supervise the burn for a small donation.
And if the burn begins to get out of control, call 9-1-1 immediately.
