Homeless Veterans to get own complex

An apartment complex purchased by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors in 2024 could soon be a place exclusively for unhoused veterans.

KCRG TV reports the 15 newly renovated and fully-furnished apartments on Hollywood Boulevard are just about ready to accept tenants. It would be the first HUD-assisted Veterans-only housing complex in the state.

Rachel Carter, Executive Director of the Iowa City Housing Authority, tells the TV station that veterans are the ones who aren’t able to find housing the most, with over 30 Iowa City veterans waiting for housing to open up. The ones that eventually move in to the new complex will give them the opportunity to focus on recovery, mental health, employment, or education.

The Supervisors still need to vote to give the property to Iowa City before vets can move in.
