Aquifer serving area towns sees demand outpace supply

US Geological Survey data shows water consumption is outpacing replenishment in an aquifer that serves growing towns in Johnson County.
KCRG TV reports growth in North Liberty, Solon, and Tiffin is draining the Sulurian aquifer and is cause for concern.
University of Iowa Research Hydrologist Greg Brennan told a group of residents during a meeting at the Solon Library that there are ways to preserve water. He said spacing of wells is the biggest solution. Wells dug too close together compete for the same water.
Between Corridor growth and the addition of data centers putting more demands on water, residents want lawmakers to address the issue. A $250,000 allocation by the state legislature is to be used to conduct a study of the state’s water resources.
Iowa Capital Dispatch reports the Iowa Department of Natural Resources released a draft version of its 2026 biennial integrated report Tuesday, which listed more than 700 segments of rivers, lakes or wetlands in the state as impaired.
