Johnson County Supervisors chair Jon Green has ordered the county’s flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who died on Tuesday at the age of 84.

Green made the announcement on his Facebook page. It comes while Gov. Kim Reynolds still has yet to make a similar proclamation statewide. Green made news last year after the death of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk, who was shot while speaking at a college in Utah last September. Reynolds ordered flags at half-staff for several days, but Green had them returned to full mast after they had been at half-staff for the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Green cited the harm he felt Kirk’s words and actions had done to marginalized groups.

Reynolds broke flag protocol herself earlier last year when she ordered flags at full staff for Donald Trump’s inauguration despite it falling during the 30-day mourning period for President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29th, 2024.

A bill introduced into the Iowa legislature earlier this month would make it mandatory for local municipalities to follow the governor’s directive on when flags should and should not be at half-staff.
