The Coralville city council voted Tuesday night to remove the city’s Flock cameras.
The cameras alert law enforcement when a vehicle identified through an Amber or Silver alert is detected. They also save plate numbers and other information for 30 days to cross reference arrest warrants and missing vehicle databases.
Councilors Katie Freeman, Hai Huynh, and Mike Knudson were the three “yes” votes, with Rich Vogelzang the lone “nay”. Royce Peterson was absent.
The cameras were already a controversial issue among many Coralville residents, but the opposition grew after the Iowa Attorney General’s office sent a letter to the city last week asking leaders to adjust the rules for who could access the cameras’ data so it could be used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The majority of the council decided to terminate the current contract rather than allow the data to be used for purposes other than those for which they were purchased.
