A South Carolina woman is accused of extorting an Iowa City man out of thousands of dollars, then sending the money to prison inmates.
47-year-old Milako Foster of Spartanburg, South Carolina was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 11:30 Wednesday morning. Iowa City Police say in October of last year Foster communicated with an Iowa City resident and misrepresented herself as a South Carolina law enforcement officer. The man was made to believe he owed a substantial amount of money for communicating with a woman in an incident involving a nude photograph that had been sent between the two. Police say the victim paid Foster $3,890.20.
Once she received the funds, Foster allegedly transferred the money from her account to those of multiple inmates inside a South Carolina prison, including an alleged co-conspirator. The accusations are backed up by transaction records.
Foster is charged with Money Laundering, Extortion, and 2nd Degree Theft. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
