Allegedly reporting his car as stolen despite knowing his son used it to elude police has led to a felony charge against an Iowa City man.

75-year-old Karim Musa of Aber Avenue was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 8:45 Sunday night. Musa’s son had been arrested after crashing Musa’s vehicle while leading a police pursuit in July of 2024. Musa allegedly reported to the ICPD and to Progressive Insurance that the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta had been stolen after he parked it and left the keys in the ignition. Musa also reportedly told the insurance company that his son was hospitalized and unable to speak, even though he was actually incarcerated.

Police say Musa and his son continued the lie to try and collect a $15,000 comprehensive loss settlement. Musa is now charged with Insurance Fraud and Making A False Report to Law Enforcement. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of six years in prison.
