UI Athletics news release
“The story today was missed opportunities on offense,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Caleb Wulf had a phenomenal game again. Oregon State has great pitching, but at the end of the day, we have to be better in those situations.”
Freshman Nick Terhaar opened the game with a three-up, three-down first inning and worked 1.1 innings before giving way to the bullpen.
Oregon State struck first with a two-run home run in the top of the second and added single runs in the third and fourth to build an early 4–0 advantage.
Iowa broke through in the bottom of the fourth when redshirt junior Kellen Strohmeyer scored on a wild pitch.
The Hawkeyes continued to build momentum in the fifth after seniors Gable Mitchell and Caleb Wulf opened the inning with consecutive singles. Senior Kooper Schulte followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Mitchell. Later in the frame, senior Joey Nerat delivered a two‑out RBI single to score Wulf, trimming the deficit to 4–3.
From there, junior Maddux Frese shut down the Beavers’ offense, throwing 5.1 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. Despite multiple late opportunities, Iowa stranded 11 runners and was unable to push across the tying run.
“Maddux Freese did a phenomenal job when he came into the game,” said Heller. “He pounded the zone and changed speeds, and they didn’t score again.”
OF NOTE
– Mitchell extended his hitting streak to 13 games, dating back to last season.
– Mitchell also recorded his eighth multi-hit game of the year, finishing 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
– Wulf posted his second straight 4-for-4 performance, marking his seventh multi-hit game of the season and the 23rd of his career.
