A local transient faces a felony charge after allegedly assaulting the protected party in a no-contact order against him.
33-year-old Dwight Davis was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 2:00 Tuesday morning. Iowa City Police say just after 11:45 Monday night Davis was in a verbal argument with the protected party near the intersection of Broadway Street and Sandusky Drive when the victim tried to disengage from the conversation. She fell when Davis was reportedly trying to chase her, and a witness says he kicked her in the face while she was on the ground. The woman suffered what appeared to be a broken nose, and she told police Davis had strangled her hours earlier. The woman had marks on her neck consistent with strangulation.
Davis allegedly gave a fake name when questioned by police. He and the woman are in a current relationship and share a child.
Davis is now charged with Assault Against a Protected Party, Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow, Providing False Identity Information, and two no-contact order violations. If convicted on all counts, Davis faces a maximum of over 11 years in prison.
