An Iowa City man accused of using a baseball bat during an assault last February has been given a suspended sentence.
20-year-old Leshawn Garrett entered a guilty plea to a charge of Assault While Displaying a Weapon in January. All other charges were dismissed.
Iowa City Police say Garrett and 20-year-old Willie Garrett, who lived together on Muscatine Avenue, met another person at Mercer Park at about 6:00 on the night of February 22nd, 2025. Willie Garrett was reportedly armed with a replica Glock 17 BB gun, while Leshawn Garrett allegedly hit the person with a baseball bat. The incident was captured on video. Iowa City Police say Willie Garrett admitted to brandishing the replica gun to scare the other person. He was given a deferred judgment on an Assault While Displaying a Weapon charge.
The latest offense was also a violation of Leshawn Garrett’s probation stemming from a July 2023 incident that saw him reportedly threatening people with a knife during a pair of robbery attempts on the Ped Mall.
