Iowa City Police have arrested a Louisa County man they say crashed his car into a pole inside a downtown parking ramp.

An officer reports seeing a 2017 Chrysler 300 driving southbound on Clinton Street with an improperly-attached front license plate just after 12:15 Friday morning. When a traffic stop was initiated, the driver allegedly pulled into the Capitol Street parking ramp and struck a pole.

The officer claims the driver, later identified as 18-year-old Nestor Chavez of Columbus Junction, then climbed from the driver’s seat into the back seat. Chavez is barred and suspended from driving, and a probable cause search of the vehicle reportedly turned up a small amount of marijuana.

Chavez is charged with Possession of Marijuana and Driving While Barred. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of three years in jail.
