A North Liberty woman was taken into custody last week after a welfare check at her residence led to an alleged spitting incident involving officers.

Police were doing a welfare check at the Holiday Lodge Road residence of 49-year-old Maria Flores Leal Friday just after 2pm. She invited them inside and she began speaking with them.

Court records indicate Leal became upset and attempted to throw a ceramic pot containing a fake plant at the officers. They grabbed her arm, and in the process Leal reportedly spit on one of their faces.

Leal was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and could face up to two years in jail if convicted on the charge.
