A gas leak on the University of Iowa campus Monday afternoon caused a building evacuation.
The Daily Iowan reports students and staff received a Hawk Alert at 5:02 p.m. to avoid the area surrounding the UI Levitt Center for University Advancement near Hancher Auditorium after a gas leak was reported.
Occupants immediately evacuated the building, and traffic was rerouted as MidAmerican Energy began work at the scene, joined by Iowa City Fire and Police departments.
MidAmerican Media Relations Manager Geoff Greenwood told the DI the leak occurred after an excavator contracted by the university hit an underground gas line with a backhoe.
Students and staff received another Hawk Alert just after 6pm saying that the leak had been resolved.
