An area transient was arrested early Tuesday after he was allegedly observed with several bags of methamphetamine.

Police say 43-year-old Derrill Jones standing behind a trash compactor at the Waterfront Hyvee just after 12:30am, handling several small plastic baggies. When officers attempted to make contact with him, Jones allegedly tried to flee, while simultaneously trying to tear open the bags in his possession. He was subdued as he continued to destroy evidence.

Once restrained, officers recovered several of the baggies. Two contained a white powdery substance consistent with methamphetamine, and another larger bag contained suspected marijuana. Additionally, a pipe containing burnt residue was found nearby that a witness confirmed belonged to Jones.

A check of his criminal record showed multiple controlled substance convictions, the most recent being from April 2025. Jones was charged with two counts of 3rd or subsequent controlled substance possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with official acts, and obstructing prosecution. If convicted on all charges, Jones faces a prison term of up to over 12 years.
