An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly threatening another man with a machete and a knife.
Police say the incident occurred during the 3am hour Wednesday at 501 Southgate. 57-year-old Charles McDile, a resident in the facility, reportedly got mad because the victim was visiting a friend in a nearby apartment and wasn’t supposed to be there. He was also mad that the victim was in the hallway.
McDile allegedly came out of his apartment armed with a machete. He pointed it at the man, and the two got into a verbal argument. McDile reportedly walked over to the victim, who then retreated into his friend’s apartment. McDile swung the machete and made contact with the door, and briefly crossed over the threshold into the apartment.
A short time later, the victim was in the hallway with other people when McDile came out of his apartment again, this time brandishing a knife. He confronted the victim, allegedly got in his face and pointed the knife directly in the man’s face.
The victim told police McDile threatened to kill him multiple times. The incident was reportedly captured on video.
McDile was arrested, and allegedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of ingested alcohol. He refused to provide a PBT.
McDile was charged with 1st degree burglary, possession of dangerous weapons while intoxicated, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, 1st degree harassment, and going armed with intent. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 35 years in prison.
