An Iowa City woman and an adult relative allegedly stripped naked in front of police who were on scene to investigate a child endangerment complaint.
Police say the incident occurred Sunday afternoon at the Town and Campus Apartments residence of 40-year-old Monica Williams. According to the arrest report, Williams was upset with an 11-year-old child over issues at school and housecleaning. She allegedly began screaming at the child and throwing objects at her. Witnesses then called police.
Williams then reportedly tried to force the child to drink cough syrup to sedate her. The girl resisted and resulted in cough syrup being spilled down the front of her clothing.
When police arrived, Williams and another adult relative allegedly stripped down and began confronting them in a hysterical screaming manner. The child pointed out that the practice of engaging police fully or partially naked is a tactic designed to make the situation maximally jarring.
The arrest report stated the behaviors of Williams and the relative posed a substantial risk to the girl’s physical, mental and emotional health.
A warrant was requested, and Williams was booked at the Johnson County Jail Tuesday morning. She was charged with Child Endangerment and could be sentenced to up to two years in jail. A no-contact order was requested between Williams and the victim.
