IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Maryland, 16–5, in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.
“I’m disappointed in more than one way,” head coach Rick Heller said. “Logan Runde did a really nice job. He wasn’t really sharp, but he battled and found a way to get through four innings. The disappointing part was that our offense didn’t do enough to make them go away. It was a one-run game, then they had a big inning when we took Runde out and went to the bullpen, and it really went haywire from there on the pitching side. Even then, when we answered back with three runs, I still felt like we were going to win the game.”
The Hawkeyes struck first in the opening inning when senior Gable Mitchell reached on a bunt single.
Freshman Carter Geffre followed with a single to left center, scoring Mitchell from second to give Iowa an early lead.
Maryland answered in the fourth inning with a triple to right field and a single to left, tying the game at 1–1.
The Terrapins took control in the fifth inning, using a single and a double to plate four runs and take a 5–1 lead.
Iowa responded in the bottom of the fifth plating three. Senior Ben Swails doubled to right-center to start the rally, and Mitchell followed with an RBI single to left to score Swails. Senior Miles Risley then doubled to left field, driving in both Mitchell and senior Kooper Schulte to cut the deficit to one.
Maryland broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring seven runs to extend its lead.
Senior Miles Risley singled in the eighth and later scored on a single up the middle by senior Caleb Wulf.
The Terrapins added four more runs in the eighth inning to push the final score to 16–5, ending the game after eight innings.
Senior Logan Runde earned the start for Iowa, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts over four innings. Junior Beau Leisure took the loss after surrendering four runs on two hits in one-third of an inning. Five additional Hawkeye pitchers saw action in the contest.
