The Iowa City Community School District Board is reconsidering a previously-planned $25 million borrowing plan after seeing improved revenues and lower costs that have eased short term cash flow concerns.
The Daily Iowan reports at Tuesday’s meeting, they voted to sell the Educational Service Center to the City of Iowa City for $3.2 million. The building housed district headquarters until a move to their current Dubuque Road location last year.
Although the district reported greater than expected revenues and lower costs in April, they still face a June 1 debt payment. Declining enrollment and inflation are seen as long-term budget challenges.
The board also discussed their $14 million pledge toward the proposed Coralville Recreation Center, which would included a competition pool with elevated seating, locker rooms, and deck space for meets. The district would be the primary user of the competition pool. The additional space would allow West and Liberty High schools to have their own swim teams instead of them being combined into one team due to the current lack of pool space.
The district’s Chief Operating Officer, Curt Pratt, said any major change in the project funding would likely force the City of Coralville to redesign the product and delay its completion.
