Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has complied with the Trump administration’s order that states submit voter date to the Justice Department.
Pate told the Gazette that he would not sign the DOJ’s “confidential memorandum of understanding” that orders states to remove any names the Department deems ineligible from their voter registration lists.
Pate’s office shared a letter sent to the DOJ expressing his concern for protecting Iowans’ privacy and maintaining the state’s authority to conduct elections.
The article adds that the DOJ has requested states’ voter registration data as Trump and his administration continue to search for voter fraud in recent elections. While there has been no evidence of widespread voter fraud, Trump continues to inaccurately assert without evidence and despite dozens of court rulings and testimony from state elections officials of all political stripes his belief that widespread voter fraud cost him the 2020 presidential election.
