An Iowa City man was arrested Saturday evening after he was discovered to have a firearm despite being a convicted felon.

Police were dispatched to the Michael Street residence of 23-year-old Samad Roberts on report of a fight in progress. While checking the residence for a knife, an officer reportedly observed a firearm spring on the floor. Both Roberts and the other resident gave permission to search, with the other resident giving details on where to search.

Officers turned up a black and silver Smith and Wesson Springfield 9mm pistol, disassembled in a trash can, and ammunition found in a shoe.

Roberts has two felony convictions from Louisiana; a conviction for aggravated assault with a firearm from 2021 in New Orleans, and one for Battery upon a Dating Partner with a Dangerous Weapon in Donaldsville from 2023.

Roberts was charged with Dominion or control of a dangerous weapon as a felon, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison sentence not exceeding five years.
