A Washington County man is accused of setting a woman’s clothes on fire and stealing her truck.

According to Washington County dispatch records, 52-year-old Terry Delay of Crawfordsville lit a pile of clothing on fire behind his house on Columbus Street just after 7:30 on Mother’s Day morning, then fled the scene in a rusty truck with no plates. The truck and the clothing belong to Delay’s partner.

A short time later, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office stopped Delay as he was driving a 2005 Chevy Sienna. He was returned to Washington County, where he was charged with 2nd Degree Arson, Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, 2nd Degree Theft, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications.

Investigators say Delay took approximately $7,750 in items from the residence, including $500 in suitcases, $2,250 in shirts and pants, and $5,000 in dresses. Delay allegedly claimed the items were in his way, so he removed them and set them ablaze.

Delay is also accused of throwing a can of soda and a block of wood at the woman on May 5th, causing a bruise on her thigh.

If convicted on all charges against him, Delay faces a maximum of over 20 years in prison.
