Iowa state senator Zach Wahls is facing an ethics complaint, accusing him of violating Iowa Senate rules by working for a network of political organizations while serving in office.

The complaint alleges that the Democrat from Coralville violated Senate ethics rules that prohibit senators from accepting employment from political action committees or politically active nonprofit organizations while serving in the Legislature.

According to the complaint, Wahls worked as executive director of The Next 50 Network. Wahls amended his financial disclosure forms listing him as an officer of Next 50 Action, a designated 501C organization.

The Next 50 organization operated a network of federal political action committees involved in supporting what their website describes as “next-generation candidates.”

The filing requests the Senate to investigate Wahls, and strip him of committee assignments during the investigation. It also demands Wahls either repay his legislative salary or compensation earned through The Next 50.

Wahls’ attorney says that his employer was Next 50 Network LLC, and not a political action committee or prohibited nonprofit under Senate ethics rules. Wahls also sought guidance from Secretary of the Senate Charlie Smithson, who determined that Wahls’ employment was strictly with the LLC and not with the other affiliated companies.

The complaint now heads to the Senate Ethics Committee. If found valid, an admonishment, an order to cease the conduct, or a recommendation that the Senate censure or reprimand Wahls are among the options for the Committee.
