An Iowa City man who allegedly assaulted the mother of their shared children has been arrested.

According to police, 32-year-old Damien Gilchrist of Davis Street was at a residence in Tiffin where the victim and their children reside and he sometimes stays. The afternoon of May 8th, Gilchrist allegedly placed his hands around the woman’s neck, causing scratches and bruising on her neck. She reportedly admitted to having difficulty breathing during the alleged altercation.

The next evening, Gilchrist returned to the residence, where he and the woman got into an argument about his belongings and him coming to the residence to retrieve his belongings. He allegedly pushed her out of the way so he could gain entrance to the residence.

A warrant for Gilchrist’s arrest was issued May 11th; he was taken into custody Tuesday morning and charged with two counts of Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd of subsequent offense, and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on all counts, Gilchrist could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.

A no-contact order was issued between the two parties. Gilchrist is being held at the Henry County Jail pending future court dates.
