A large fight on Broadway Street involving baseball bats has led to a weapons charge against an Iowa City man.
Iowa City Police were called to the area behind the Broadway Street Casey’s just before 9pm Sunday for several people fighting…some of whom were holding bats. As officers arrived a vehicle pulled out of the parking lot where the fight was reported. The car was stopped, and investigators noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside. A probable cause search turned up a CO2 BB pistol in the back pocket of the driver’s seat.
The vehicle’s driver, 18-year-old Andre Smith of Hudson Avenue, said he knew the gun was there, but it wasn’t his. He did admit to firing the weapon inside city limits a few days earlier.
Smith is charged with Carrying Toy Guns or Slingshots, a simple misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 30 days in jail.
Smith was arrested on July 18th after he and two accomplices were seen on security video entering an address on Silver Lane around 5am on July 11th. The trio grabbed multiple pairs of shoes from a shoe rack before fleeing the residence. Two residents were present during the time of the theft. They told investigators the value of the missing items was approximately $4,000.
A search warrant executed on Smith’s residence turned up multiple pairs of shoes matching the description of those reported stolen were found inside.
Smith was charged with 2nd Degree Burglary and 2nd Degree Theft. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
