Nurses and other University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics employees have filed a lawsuit against the Iowa Board of Regents claiming they were not paid for extra time worked within the time frame required by state law.

According to the Press-Citizen, the plaintiffs argue that UIHC policy prevents them from being paid for working weekend, evening and overnight shifts within the same pay period or within 12 days, as required by law. They allege that in some cases, the employees are not compensated for the extra hours, or “adjustments”, until one or two months after the hours were worked.

The lawsuit alleges that the Regents set the policy “willfully and intentionally”.

Although only three employees are named as plaintiffs, the class-action suit includes all former and current UIHC employees over the last two years who were not paid for extra hours within 12 days, which includes over 2,000 people.

University officials claim they are complying with the Iowa Code, and all payments are made within one month.
