An allegedly drunk Washington County man told Iowa City Police he wasn’t going to drive due to his level of intoxication…then he was arrested for drunk driving.
23-year-old Joseph Fritz of Washington initially reported just after 4:30 Tuesday morning that his Buick LeSabre had been stolen. A short time later police located it a few blocks away from where he thought he’d left it.
Dispatchers called Fritz to let him know they’d located the vehicle. He said he’d also located it, but wasn’t going to drive because he was too intoxicated.
Fritz was stopped by police about 20 minutes later, driving near the corner of Davenport and Lucas Streets. He showed multiple signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking.
Investigators say Fritz told them he had told dispatchers he was too drunk to drive, but he was now fine. A Datamatser test registered his blood alcohol concentration at .171.
Fritz was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense.
