Defense attorneys have withdrawn a motion to suppress in the case of a woman who shot two people in downtown Iowa City.
25-year-old Lindsay Beyer is accused of lying to police about the whereabouts of her live-in girlfriend, Arielle Grier, after Grier shot two people last year.
Police say that just before 2am on September 29th Grier and her brother, 29-year-old Darelle Bull of Cottonwood Avenue, began arguing with another group outside the Kum & Go on East Burlington Street.
The other group walked away, but police say Grier and Bull chased them down and attacked them. It’s during that assault Bull allegedly punched one of the victims, knocking him out. Grier is alleged to have pulled a .40-caliber handgun from her waistband and fired six shots; one of those shots hit one of the other men and two accidentally struck Bull.
Grier then allegedly fled back to her and Beyer’s South Dubuque Street apartment. A later search of that apartment, police say, turned up a .40-caliber handgun and ammunition.
Bull was reportedly uncooperative during the investigation. But investigators obtained video from the day Bull was released from the hospital showing him and Grier rapping about the shootings. They also found texts from Bull to Beyer discussing his need for surgery.
Grier was initially charged with two counts of Attempted Murder and one of Reckless Use of a Firearm with Serious Injury. She had faced up to 60 years in prison, but in a plea deal with prosecutors those charges were reduced to Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Serious Injury and Willful Injury Causing Injury. She was sentenced to ten years in prison.
Bull is charged with Accessory to a Felony and Assault Causing Bodily Injury. Trial is set for September 24th. If convicted, he faces a maximum of three years in prison.
Beyer, meanwhile, faces one count of Accessory to a Felony, an aggravated misdemeanor carrying up to two years in jail. A case management conference is set for September 30th.
