A trial date has now been set for both suspects in a violent attack at an Iowa City convenience store earlier this year.
21-year-old DeJuanyae Jones Jr. of North Towne Court in Cedar Rapids appeared in Johnson County Court on Friday, where Judge Andrew Chappell set a trial date of January 21st. A case management conference was set for January 3rd.
According to arrest records, Jones and 23-year-old Keith Kizart of Westwinds Drive in Iowa City confronted and assaulted another man just after 11am on October 27th at the Mormon Trek Kum & Go. The two are seen on surveillance video punching, pushing, tackling, then stomping on the victim. They also allegedly pistol-whipped him with a Co2 gun. One witness told police Kizart pointed the gun at the victim as if he were going to shoot him. Police say the attack as unprovoked.
Jones then drove away from the scene with Kizart. The victim was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with a head injury, bleeding from the head, a left eye swollen shut and a possible concussion.
Kizart was later found with the gun, which was broken. He told police he used it because the police had taken his real gun.
Kizart and Jones were each charged with Assault While Using or Displaying a Weapon and Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury. If convicted of both charges, they each face a maximum of 12 years in prison.
Kizart faces an additional charge of Going Armed with Intent, which carries a maximum five-year prison sentence. His trial date, which is also set for January 21st, was determined last month.
