An area transient under arrest for public intoxication now faces up to an additional two years in prison after injuring an officer Sunday night.
22-year-old Jonathan St. John was under arrest, and allegedly started to make statements that he was going to fight officers. While at the Johnson County Jail on South Capitol Street at approximately 10:40pm, St. John was taken into the intake area and deputies got him out of the squad car. St. John then reportedly went after an officer to kick him, and deputies had to restrain him.
After deputies talked to St. John and got him to calm down, they tried to walk him into the jail again, but St. John allegedly tried to kick the officer again. This time, deputies took St. John to the ground. One of the officers injured his hand in the fracas, and when the hand started to swell up went to the hospital. Doctors advised him that he tore some tendons and might need surgery.
St. John faces the initial charge of public intoxication and now faces interference with official acts causing serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years if convicted.
