The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is expanding its COVID-19 testing to include all inpatients upon admission. The new testing protocols began on Thursday.
Previously, all inpatients were screened upon admittance, and those with symptoms were tested for COVID-19. UI Health Care’s newly expanded testing capabilities will now require testing for patients who are not currently displaying symptoms.
Tests are processed on-site at the UIHC laboratory, which has the ability to process over 700 COVID-19 tests per day. Hospital officials say on-site testing enables patients to receive quicker results. Patients who test positive will be moved to an isolated COVID unit with additional safety measures in place to prevent the spread of disease.
