An Iowa City man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after allegedly getting into a domestic dispute with his wife and threatening his wife’s cousin with a knife.

According to arrest reports, 31-year-old Herbert Barr of Petsel Place was involved in a verbal altercation with his wife and his wife’s cousin  at about 12:45 pm. The wife went into a room with the cousin, and Barr attempted to follow. When the cousin refused Barr’s entry, an argument ensued.

During the argument, Barr is accused of grabbing a knife and making stabbing and slashing motions in the directions of the cousin. He also allegedly made comments that he would “gut” the cousin.

Barr then reportedly grabbed his wife and took her car keys out of her hand. He then fled the scene, allegedly with a vehicle that wasn’t his.

Barr was arrested and charged with first offense Domestic Abuse Assault and 3rd degree Harassment, and could be sentenced to sixty days in jail if convicted on both counts. A no contact order was issued between Barr and the cousin.
