The return of Iowa football meant an uptick in the number of complaints about a lack of social distancing at Iowa City drinking establishments.

According to online Iowa City Police records, the first such complaint came at 2pm Saturday, a half-hour before the Hawkeyes kicked off at Purdue. A caller told police there were two long lines waiting to get into Bo James on East Washington Street, and while people were wearing masks, they were still concerned about social distancing inside the restaurant.

At 2:38pm a caller said there were too many people inside Players on Iowa Avenue and nobody was wearing a mask.

A call came in about Brothers on the Ped Mall at 4:08pm, with a caller saying there was no social distancing.

Iowa City Police also received numerous calls about loud, outdoor parties with anywhere from a dozen to over 100 people not social distancing. The University of Iowa had sent out a recommendation the previous day advising those who wished to watch the game with friends to hold outdoor viewing parties.

Iowa lost to the Boilermakers, 24-20. They return to action Saturday when they host Northwestern at Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30pm on ESPN.
