Causing a disturbance at a Coralville gas station led police to a convicted car thief accused of stealing another vehicle.
Coralville Police were called to Hy-Vee Gas on the Coralville Strip just before 1:30pm Saturday. A man who had caused issues had just left the store, and staff provided police with a description of his vehicle, a 2004 Porsche.
Officers caught up with the car, which had been parked. 28-year-old Davon’te Coleman of the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street was seen walking away from the vehicle. He was arrested for Driving While Barred, as he is barred from driving until November of 2021.
While at the Johnson County Jail, the arresting officer learned that the car Coleman had been driving was reported stolen out of Iowa City on Thursday. The owner told police the car had been stolen twice during the week
Coleman is additionally charged with 1st Degree Theft. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 12 years in prison.
This isn’t the first time Coleman has been accused of driving a stolen car to a Coralville gas station. Last March he was found with a stolen 2005 Cadillac DeVille at the Kum & Go on the Coralville Strip. He pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Theft and Driving While Barred charges and was fined $1,250.
