An Iowa City man faces charges after allegedly trying to start fights at his apartment building.

Police were dispatched to the 300 block of South Clinton Street Sunday at 1:20am on reports of a fight in progress and someone being held down on the ground. Upon arrival, they learned that the man on the ground was the one who was causing the trouble, and his roommate was holding him down to stop him from picking fights with people outside of the apartment building .

The man on the ground, 19-year-old Brandon Olson, was observed thrashing around, trying to bite and strike his roommate. An officer instructed Olson to roll over onto his stomach and put his hands behind his back, and identified himself as a police officer when Olson ignored the initial request. After refusing to comply, the officer attempted to roll him over, but Olson reportedly continued to resist before being handcuffed.

Olson allegedly continued to thrash about, kick and bite at officers. He bit another officer who was restraining his head. OC spray was deployed in Olson’s eyes to get him to comply. Arriving paramedics sedated Olson so that they could take him to the hospital for treatment.

Olson was charged with public intoxication, interference with official acts, disorderly conduct, and assault on persons in certain occupations, and could face a jail sentence of up to 15 months if convicted.
