A local transient faces charges that he flipped a picnic table over on another man, then hit him with a golf club, choked him and bit him.

Iowa City Police were called to the 1105 Project on Gilbert Court at 1:47 Saturday afternoon for a fight where one subject was armed with a golf club. Witnesses told arriving officers that 44-year-old Michael Dacunos had been standing on top of a picnic table shouting racial slurs at a man sitting at another table when Dacunos walked over to the other table and flipped it over with the other man still sitting there. The victim got up off the ground, returned to the table and sat down. That’s when Dacunos allegedly hit the man with a golf club. The two then began rolling on the ground, with Dacunos allegedly choking the victim and biting his finger. The bite wound required medical attention at a hospital.

After police arrived, Dacunos allegedly lunged at his victim as he walked by.

Dacunos is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year in jail.

Last summer Dacunos spent one day in jail after yelling racial slurs at a woman waiting for food outside Best China on Boyrum Street, also calling her a “bitch” before telling her “black lives don’t matter”. Last month he was arrested for breaking multiple car windows at Deery Brothers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Highway 1 West. He also allegedly damaged cars parked in the 600 block of South Riverside Drive and the 1100 block of South Gilbert Street.
