An Iowa City man has been arrested after a domestic incident at his residence turned physical.
Arrest reports indicate that 42-year-old Ajais Wheeldon of Kyle Drive and the woman had an argument just before 2 am Tuesday. During the incident, he’s accused of putting his hands around the woman’s neck and applying pressure. She allegedly tried to use her cellphone to call 911, but Wheeldon reportedly took it away from her. The woman had to utilize the residence’s home security system to call the authorities.
Arriving officers noted that the woman suffered several scratches and abrasions on her neck, with redness and swelling. She also said that Wheeldon’s reported attack caused her to lose her breath, and feared for her life. Afterwards, the woman complained of difficulty swallowing.
A warrant was requested for Wheeldon’s arrest, and he was taken into custody later that afternoon. He’s charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all counts, Wheeldon could be sentenced to over six years in prison.
A no-contact order was requested between the two.
