An office used by Unity Point Health in Cedar Rapids was destroyed by fire Wednesday night.
The Gazette reports that the building, on the 3800 block of River Ridge Drive Northeast, has been mostly vacant because employees are working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, two employees were in the building when an automatic fire alarm went off at 6:07pm and escaped safely. The first crews on scene found about half of the top floor engulfed in flames. The roof began to sag about an hour later.
Unity Point Health’s Facebook page says that no patient data or medical records were affected, but the fire department believes the building is a total loss.
Unity Point Health leased the building from TBD Investments. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
