Elementary classroom sizes in the Iowa City Community School District have increased over the last year, with a drop in the number of teachers at the same time.

The Daily Iowan reports that there are 349 teachers in the 22 district elementary schools this year, down from 370 ½ from the last school year. Average classroom size increased slightly, from 20.6 students last school year to 21.4 students this year.

ICCSD Chief Human Resource Officer Nick Proud told the DI that he does not consider the district to be in a teacher shortage currently. Additionally, Board President Ruthina Malone wrote an email to the paper and said that the district is able to attract quality, diverse teachers.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Malone said the number of open teacher positions are likely to be filled before it becomes an issue in the district.
